A homeless person was being questioned and they "...tend to tell you what they believe you want to hear."
That reminded me of homeless intakes at various shelters. Did the person ask if I used drugs or what drug I used.
I would tell them, I do not use drugs. They would coax, saying it was okay to tell them. I was telling the truth. I would often say "cigarettes and coffee." Also true, although I never considered cigarettes to be a drug.
They dealt with homeless people for years and they were probably like the character in the novel ~ believing we tell them what we think they want to hear.
