Death of a Butterfly

Two homeless mentions in Death of a Butterfly by Margaret Maron. A character complains, "...if you're already sheltering the homeless, you should not allow your good Samaritan impulses to run away with you." The character is staying in a woman's apartment while she is traveling. The woman arranges for nine "boat people" to move into her apartment with him. To his complaints, he is told, "..these people are homeless. They've lost everything."

Some homeless do not lose everything; tote possessions around in large suitcases and grocery store shopping carts. Others rent storage units to keep there stuff hoping for the day when they will once again be homed. Other homeless survive with next to no possessions. They get clean clothes at places that provide used clothing ~ and often new, never worn items ~ throwing the clothes that were on their back in the trash.

Yet losing the roof over one's head is like losing everything. Pride, self-esteem, respect and stuff like that.
