Sidney Poitier was homeless in 1943. He had $39.00 after working a summer job, took a bus to New York city and "sleeping on rooftops". Coming from Cat Island, Nassau, Bahama and Miami, Florida, he was not at all prepared for winter. He solved the problem by joining the Army. Poitier also mentions in his book, The Measure of A Man: a spiritual autobiography, "sleeping in a pay toilet in New York."
