The same lady that made a stink due to her son being exposed to smoke from a cigarette being smoked by one of the last two people in Long Beach who still smoke will likely have barbecuing at Bixby Park banned next.
Barbecuing produces gas and smoke containing polycyclic hydrocarbons, aka: PCHs.
PCHs are carcinogenic. Fat dripping on flames creates even more toxic fumes. Thick clouds of smoke at Bixby Park come from the grilling, not from cigarettes. Yet the wimpy lady who is so afraid of her son being exposed to smoke from a cigarette being smoked half a block away from the soccer game, did not complain, yet, about the BBQ grills.
I have spent a lot of time at Bixby Park, especially back in 1994 through 1998 when Long Beach had not yet started its anti-cigarette campaign. Do not recall smelling cigarette smoke; lots of memories of marijuana and BBQ smoke. The only time I smell cigarette smoke is when walking directly past anyone who is smoking. I have seen lots of picnics, with several people smoking at a table, yet very little smoke in the air.
In additon the combustion of proteins or cooking meat over direct fire leads to the production of heterocyclic aromatic amines or HAAs.
HAAS are likewise carcinogenic. As with alcohol, BBQ's are too socially acceptable to ever be banned in Long Beach.
