I interrupt this story for a special message. Sass was the name I gave to my All About Mary website blog. Most of the stuff is not worth reposting; not that I let that stop me from reposting using the backdate method. I hate that "Why are you homeless?" question. Answered it in those blog posts. I also come upon stuff like the following, that seems too relevant to throw away. The Village people often call me an activist~attempting to educate people about homelessness. Actually I was trying to get a hand up, not a hand out with my various blogs and websites. After getting a computer and Internet access showed some You Tube videos to my PSC. Young, she never heard the songs. The more stuff embedded in blogs, the slower it loads so will be posting links to videos related to homelessness on the sidebar, rather than the videos themselves. That said from May 27, 2007:
Leave Me Alone
Michael Jackson's mental malfunctions may have arised from growing up in a domestic abusive household, coupled with being thrust into the limelight at an early age. He is quoted as saying that when he saw James Brown performing he decided that is what he wanted to do. Studies have shown that persons of tremendous talent and genius also are prone to depressions and eccentric behavior.
His Neverland Ranch may be an outward display of a desire to escape the adult world. So could his song Leave Me Alone.
Delta Dawn
A lyric from Delta Dawn by Helen Reddy says: "folks 'round Brownsville say she's crazy". I met a lot of Delta Dawn's on the sidewalks of Long Beach. You may have seen a few yourself.
Angie Baby
In her song Angie Baby she sings "it's so nice to be insane, nobody asks you to explain". Perhaps some homeless women got to the point when they got tired of explaining to a world that does not listen and simply opted to slip into insanity.
Ruby Red Dress...
"...wanders round the town, Talkin to herself now, sometimes sit'en down; Don't you get too close now, Ruby runs away..." and "I can hear her say...Leave me alone, won't you leave me alone, please leave me alone..."
Bloggers often spread the gospel according to City Workers, News Reporters & Service Workers: they refuse services; they do not want help; they choose to be homeless. If they watched the videos or listened to those songs, they might become a bit more educated about homeless people, especially homeless women. Listen again to the line "...they always seem to fade away when your daddy taps on the door".
Layman can not see inside a homeless person's brain to see what type of mental breakdown or malfunction is going on. The homeless woman may not be walking around carrying a suitcase (well most homeless people do have suitcases or backpacks) or talking to herself and what torments her mind may fade away when you appear.
As my homeless peers agree, all homeless people are crazy or have a mental health issue. Left alone they are mostly harmless. Trying to corral and lock them up may cause them to react like any cornered animal.
The leading causes of homelessness among homeless women are probably domestic violence and sexual assault. Both of those things may cause depression and other mental health disorders that evidentially lead to their homelessness. Ending homelessness among women might mean ending domestic abuse and rapes, especially among defenseless children. Affordable housing and shelters might provide the escape they need. Lacking that some do "break down to a fool".
Postscript: I explain to the Village people that I feel like I am walking on a tightrope and that I may fall off at any moment. I am Ruby Red Red Dress. Leave Me Alone. Because they are not with me 24/7 they are not aware of just how seriously close I am to slipping into Ruby's world totally. I do try to explain, but they simply debunk my issues putting their own spin on something of which they know nothing.
