The Street Lawyer

The Street Lawyer by John Grisham is all about homelessness in Washington, D.C.

Things have changed since the novel was published in 1998, yet, as things change they remain the same.

The novel's characters discuss defunding of programs that help the homeless. I saw this first hand during my times on the streets. I also met many of the characters described in the book ~ rather real people much like the fictional characters.

I was not aware that there were "street lawyers" ~ attorneys who worked to resolve conflicts involving homeless people. There were social workers who did much the same as the fictional street lawyers, helping with court cases, applying for Social Security or other government benefits, often denied due to no permanent address.
